Fly Fishing the River Dee in Scotland

Beats: Little Blackhall, Inchmalo or Crathies Castle

May & June 2010 - 4 People Per Trip

The river Dee is a one of the 5 major rivers in Scotland. It rises high in the Cairngorm Mountains and flows through some absolutely stunning scenery of the Dee Valley before it runs out into the sea by Aberdeen.

It is probably one of the most iconic rivers in the Highlands of Scotland and the months of May and June are truly a beautiful time of year on these waters.

Fishing Lodge, Little Blackhall, River Dee, Scotland

The salmon run up the river from early spring and in May and June the grilse and sea trout start making their way into the beats, followed by the summer run of salmon.  Frankly, it's the perfect location for a UK guided fly fishing trip.

We will be based in Banchory, a busy little town some 25 miles west of Aberdeen with shops, banks, restaurants and hotels. There are lovely riverside walks, golf courses and other amenities. We will be staying in a very comfortable fishing lodge or hotel adjacent to the fly fishing location.

Flyfishing The River Dee, UK

Getting there by car from London is approximately 8.5 hours drive via the motorway network. Detailed instructions will be provided when you book.

Getting there by air you can fly to Aberdeen airport where we will pick you up and take you to the fishing location.

What fishing gear to bring: 14’ or 15’ salmon rods are advised, for most of the fishing. However, in June the water can be very low and a 13’ rod and light line would be advisable. Also bring chest waders and a wading stick, and of course your fly boxes.

Don't have any fly fishing gear? No problem! If you are flying up or don’t have any salmon kit we can supply it all for you. We have sets of Hardy outfits to suit the conditions just waiting there for you.

How much actual fishing will we do? The fishing is from Monday to Saturday inclusive, so you will need to arrive Sunday afternoon to get settled in to the lodge which we have for the week on a self-catering basis, or the hotel we have booked for the week. The hotel booking includes dinner, bed & breakfast each day and lunch will be provided in the fishing hut.

Who's going to take care of us? There is a resident gillie on all the beats we fish who will sort out the fishing rota’s, show you the pools and will be only too pleased to recommend the right fly to use.

Tim or his staff will also be with you throughout your time on the trip, pointing you to the best places to cast, helping you to land your fish and photographing you with your catch. We will also show you different ways to cover the water and be available for any tuition if you experience any difficulty.

We will arrange transport for those without cars to and from the fly fishing location and provide lunch in the fishing huts. We will also have a selection of flies, baits and other consumables available in case you need a top up.

We also offer a three day option fishing Monday to Wednesday (arrive Sunday and depart Wednesday PM) or Thursday to Saturday (arrive Wednesday evening and depart Sunday AM.)

Our one aim is to make your stay a memorable fly fishing experience.

How much does it cost? from £850 per person per week.

Fly Fishing the River Tweed in Scotland

Beat: Lower Birgham

17th - 22nd August 2010 | 3 People Per Trip

This time of year is the start of the early autumn run and you have a very rare opportunity to fish this excellent beat on the River Tweed near Coldstream, a small border town between England and Scotland. The town gave the name to the Coldstream Guards, one of the famous British regiments.

Fly fishing on the River Tweed, Scotland

The fishing is 2 miles out of the town towards Kelso. You will be staying at the Cross Keys Hotel in the centre of the cobbled square of Kelso, where you will find all the services you may need: restaurants, tackle shops, coffee houses and much more. Floors Castle is just a mile out of the town and is well worth a visit.

We fish with 3 people only. There are 2 boats which fish the deep holding pools and one person fishes the cauld pools and the fast streams on the upper part of the beat.

There are two fishing huts on the riverside where you can enjoy lunch and watch the fish leap on their way up river.

The anglers change round at lunchtime each day so everybody gets a chance to fish all the pools with the gullies. This really is salmon fishing at it’s best!

Getting there by car from London takes around 6.5 hours via the motorway, taking the A1 North and the A697 to Coldstream. Detailed instructions will be provided when you book.

Getting there by air, you can fly to Edinburgh Airport where you can hire a car or we can pick you up and take you to the hotel and fly fishing location each day.  What fishing gear you need to bring: 14’ or 15’ salmon rods are advised. You will need floating, sink tip or Wet Cell 2 spey lines for most of the fishing. Also bring chest waders, a wading stick and of course your fly boxes. You may wish to bring a spinning rod and a selection of spinning baits for use in high water.

Don't have any fly fishing gear? No problem! Again, if are flying up or don’t have any salmon kit we can supply it all for you. We supply sets of Hardy outfits to suit the conditions and they will be there waiting there for you.

How much actual fly fishing will we do? As for the River Dee trip, the fishing is from Monday to Saturday inclusive, so again, you will need to arrive Sunday afternoon to get settled into the fishing lodge or the hotel we have booked for the week. Packed lunches will be provided in the fishing hut daily and the hotel accommodation will include dinner, bed & breakfast. Any extra’s such as drinks from the bar and any other items purchased from the hotel are payable to the hotel on departure.

Who's going to take care of us during the trip? The ghillis are all very experienced, knowledgeable and there to help you all the way. They will be on hand to offer tips and tricks, show you the pools and arrange the rotas.

Also, Tim or a staff member will be on hand to assist you throughout the entire fly fishing experience. We will point you to the best casting spots, help to land your fish, if you need it, and even take snapshots of your day's catch. We'll also instruct you on the various ways to cover the water and be available for tuition to help improve your expertise.

We will arrange transport, if you don't have your own, to and from the fly fishing location and ensure a good lunch in the fishing huts. We will also have a selection of flies, baits and other consumables at hand in case you need a top up.

As a matter of interest, on last year's fly fishing trip, during the same week, 18 salmon and 6 sea trout were caught by six rods. And in 2007, 3 people fishing caught 31 salmon between them. So expect to catch some fish! Spey casting tuition will be available each day if you need to brush up on your casting.

We also offer a three day option fishing  Monday to Wednesday (arrive Sunday and depart Wednesday PM) or Thursday to Saturday (arrive Wednesday evening and depart Sunday AM.)

Our one aim is to make your stay a memorable fly fishing experience.

Fly Fishing the River Tweed in Scotland

Beat: Lower Pavilion

September 7th -12th 2010 | 6 People Per Trip

Lower Pavilion is a very productive middle Tweed beat adjacent to the border town of Melrose, a charming bustling country town with several very nice hotels and some excellent restaurants.

The beat itself is just a short walk from the town centre which takes us over a foot bridge to the fishing hut. This very comfortable little fishing hut stands on the left bank of the river and is well equipped with all mod cons.

The resident gillie is Scott Povey who will be on hand to show you the river and the best way to fish the pools.

The Upper Tweed

Beats: Glenormiston, Holly Lee, or The Nest,

November 9th - 14th 2010  _ 3 beats | 8 People Per Trip

The Tontine Hotel, Peebles, Scotland

You will be staying at the Tontine Hotel in Peebles, a charming family owned hotel with comfortable en-suite bedrooms, many of which overlook the river. It boasts a quaint cobbled yard which provides plenty of room for parking.

There are some lovely walks around the Tweed, which is just a short distance from the back of the Tontine Hotel. Peebles itself is a bustling town at the head of the Tweed Valley, and has a vibrant high street full of nice restaurants, good shopping and the usual array of banks.

The fishing will be on the upper beats of the Tweed and the party will fish on three beats, alternating round so everybody fishes all the beats twice during the week. This gives everybody a chance to catch fish whatever the state of the river.

We'll be just in time for the main autumn run, which is probably the best time to be on the river. All good autumn beats with an excellent chance of a Salmon. Spey casting tuition will be available each day if you feel you need any help.

What fishing gear to bring with you: Fishing at this time of the year is by fly only and it is recommended that you bring a 15’ rod as well as chest waders. The best patterns at this time of year would be Cascades, Monroe Killer, Ally’s Shrimp, Junction Shrimp and as the light fails a White Wing will prove very effective. We will have a selection of appropriate flies available to purchase if you run out or haven’t got the right pattern or size. The wading on these beats is good but please bring a safety inflation vest or collar when wading in deep water.

Don't have any fly fishing gear? No problem! As usual, if you are flying up or don’t have any salmon kit we can supply it all for you. We have sets of Hardy outfits to suit the conditions ready there for you.
